Our Annual Reports highlight the lessons, partnerships, innovations, and community-driven solutions that help strengthen civilian protection around the world.
Civilian harm can be prevented, reduced, and addressed
We work alongside civilians affected by conflict to understand protection risks, strengthen community-led solutions, and advocate for safer policies and practices.
In Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, Yemen, and elsewhere, CIVIC has worked alongside communities and decision-makers to strengthen protection practices and improve civilian safety. CIVIC’s work has contributed to concrete protection outcomes, including:
- Improvised explosive devices have been removed from civilian roads and routes.
- Artillery positions have been relocated away from civilian areas.
- Civilians have gained safer access to farmland and firewood collection through coordinated patrols and escorts.
- Governments and militaries have adopted policies, training, and civilian harm-tracking mechanisms to strengthen protection practices.
- UN peacekeeping missions have received stronger guidance and tools to better protect civilians.
Time and again, over more than 20 years, CIVIC has demonstrated that civilian harm is not inevitable. It can be prevented, reduced, and addressed.
