THE HAGUE, Aug. 5, 2024 – Center for Civilians in Conflict (CIVIC) strongly condemns the recent assault by the armed group Al-Shabaab at a popular beachfront in Mogadishu, resulting in the deaths of at least 37 civilians and leaving over 200 others injured. CIVIC calls upon Somali authorities and their partners to deploy stronger measures to protect civilians from future attacks.
“The consistent targeting of civilian sites in Somalia demonstrates a disregard for international humanitarian law. Such callous indifference to civilian lives is deeply troubling,” said Vianney Bisimwa, CIVIC’s Africa and Middle East Director.
This latest attack represents one of the most severe assaults on civilians in Mogadishu in recent years. CIVIC reminds Al-Shabaab of its obligations under international humanitarian law and urges the group to immediately cease further attacks on civilian areas in Mogadishu and elsewhere in the country and the region.
