December 23, 2020 On December 22, the White House announced that President Trump had granted a full pardon to four men convicted in the murder of seventeen Iraqi civilians in 2007.

Center for Civilians in Conflict Executive Director Federico Borello issued the following statement.

Few gestures could set back the cause of accountability for civilians in war as effectively as a pardon offered by a head of state for political reasons. The President’s decision undermines the claim that America will hold its own to account for crimes committed in war. The pardons are a disservice to all who operate within the bounds of the law in war, and an insult to the survivors and family members of those murdered.
