Geneva, 16 September 2026 — Center for Civilians in Conflict (CIVIC) is launching a new digital community designed to bring together philanthropists, innovators, supporters and people interested in civilian protection, into closer conversation with the organization and with one another.   

Developed with Agora, the initiative allows participants to exchange ideas, discuss proposals and vote on initiatives through a digital membership. It is part of CIVIC’s broader exploration of participatory philanthropy and new ways to engage future generations of supporters, including blockchain technology and innovative fundraising. 

Philanthropy is changing. A new generation of supporters increasingly wants not only to give, but to participate, exchange ideas and understand more directly the impact they can have,” said Mario Stephan, CIVIC’s Director of Philanthropic Partnerships. “We want to explore what it means to build that kind of relationship around civilian protection — one that is more participatory, community-driven and open to new ideas.

This initiative is not simply about fundraising. It is about listening, learning, and building relationships with communities that are exploring new ways to give, participate, and support causes online. It also creates opportunities to bring together people who may not otherwise meet — from technology entrepreneurs and humanitarian practitioners to philanthropists, researchers and existing CIVIC supporters. 

This pilot project is open to everyone, whether they have prior experience with CIVIC, blockchain technology, digital philanthropy, or not. Participation is designed to be simple. No prior knowledge of blockchain or digital assets is required.

Once registered, participants receive a digital membership token (NFT), which serves as a membership card and enables them to participate in community discussions, explore proposals, and vote. 

CIVIC sees emerging technologies as offering new possibilities for participation, collective action, and philanthropy. For CIVIC, technology is a means to an end: building stronger connections, bringing new ideas and perspectives into the conversation, and mobilizing broader support for civilian protection.
