Alfredo Malaret Baldo is CIVIC’s Humanitarian Diplomacy Advisor (United Nations), based in the New York office. In this role, Alfredo engages with UN Member States, UN agencies, and civil society partners to advance civilian protection solutions.

Alfredo monitors UN policy developments, supports Security Council and other multilateral processes, produces policy research and advocacy products, strengthens CIVIC’s partnerships and coalition engagement, and helps ensure that humanitarian diplomacy efforts remain aligned with CIVIC’s field programming and priorities. 

Alfredo counts with extensive experience across the United Nations system and multilateral processes, local policymaking, research and impact monitoring, and violence prevention.  

Most recently, Alfredo served as the Arms & Ammunition Consultant with the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) at UN Headquarters, where he designed whole-of-system responses to global safety and security challenges. Prior to that, he worked as Urban Violence Officer at the University of San Diego, supporting 24 cities and 40 community-based organizations, through the Peace in Our Cities (PiOC) network, to reduce violence.

He previously served as a Researcher with the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), coordinating its work on explosive weapons and the urbanization of violence. Earlier in his career, Alfredo worked with the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), measuring progress on Sustainable Development Goal 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), and with the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace, Disarmament and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNLIREC), where he combined research, policy, and operational work to support public safety initiatives across the region. 

Alfredo holds master’s degrees in Public Affairs from Brown University and International Affairs from Pennsylvania State University, as well as a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Communications from Fairleigh Dickinson University. In recognition of his work achieving measurable reductions in violence and his ability to bridge local and global policy spaces, he received Pennsylvania State University’s 2024 Alumni Achievement Award. 

Outside of work, Alfredo is married, enjoys playing soccer, and lives in New York City.
