Meet Mariana Barchuk-Halyk, Senior Protection Officer
Mariana Barchuk-Halyk serves as a Senior Protection Officer at the Center for Civilians in Conflict (CIVIC). Her work and research focus on human security and language policy, with research conducted at the European UniversityInstitute in Florence (2023), Warsaw University (2016-2017), and Prešov University in Slovakia (2011).
Mariana has extensive experience in humanitarian response and leadership, having served as a team lead for the Malteser Relief Service of Ukraine’s mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina (2018) and Poland (2016).
Mariana holds a BA in Law, an MA in Ukrainian and Polish Philology, an MA in Cultural Studies from Warsaw University, and a PhD in Philology.
Her academic career includes roles as an academic teacher in Ukrainian Language and Literature atIstanbul University and Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University, Faculty of Philology. She has also taught special courses on Central and Eastern European cultural, ethnic, and religious issues for a Master’s program.
Since 2007, Mariana has worked as a translator specializing in Polish and Ukrainian. She is the author of 14 articles and co-author of the book. Since 2014, Mariana has been an active first aid volunteer, obtaining certification asa first aid rescuer in Poland in 2016 and 2023.
