Advancing Civilian Protection Across Africa

CIVIC’s work in Africa began in Nigeria and has since expanded across the Sahel and East Africa through sustained engagement with communities, civil society organizations, governments, and security actors.

Across the region, CIVIC advances practical approaches to civilian protection through community-based protection, civilian harm tracking initiatives, research, advocacy, and engagement with defense and security actors to strengthen policies and practices that better protect civilians.

Over the years, CIVIC has helped establish civilian harm tracking and analysis mechanisms in the Sahel, strengthened locally led protection efforts in conflict-affected communities, and expanded its regional engagement through its East Africa program based in Nairobi, Kenya.

Today, CIVIC continues to work across diverse African contexts, partnering with local, national, and regional stakeholders to address evolving protection challenges and improve outcomes for civilians affected by conflict.

For a decade, conflict has impacted the lives of civilians with insecurity, displacement across Mali, Niger, Burkina-Faso, Chad and Mauritania.

Sudan

Intensified military operations, prolonged sieges, and rapidly shifting dynamics have drastically escalated the threats civilians facing.
