CIVIC’s work in Nigeria began through research on civilian experiences of conflict in the country’s Northeast and has since grown into long-term engagement with communities, civil society organizations, security actors, and government institutions across Borno State and beyond.

Since 2016, CIVIC Nigeria has worked to strengthen civilian protection and civilian harm mitigation through community engagement, research, advocacy, and practical protection initiatives focused on the realities civilians face in conflict-affected areas.

CIVIC has supported efforts to improve engagement between civilians and security actors, strengthen protection practices within military operations, and elevate civilian perspectives in national conversations around security and protection.

Alongside this work, CIVIC partners with local communities and organizations to identify protection concerns, support community-based protection strategies, and advocate for responses that better address the needs and experiences of civilians affected by conflict.

As conflict dynamics continue evolving across Northeast Nigeria, CIVIC’s work remains focused on strengthening practical, civilian-centered approaches to protection, accountability, and harm mitigation.
